You make a strong argument for investing in our armed forces as way to generate future growth in jobs and learning as well as addressing some of the issues regarding rudderless youth. Guys I served with have grandkids who are serving in the army who tell of returning from exercises cold, wet, tired and hungry at 8 at night to be told kitchen closed! Civvy catering. I well remember how it felt but I got hot scoff before crashing in my pit. Bloody disgrace. Starmer needs to go, but god knows where we will find a decent leader to replace him.

Well put Robin. This articulates the huge social and economic benefits a properly resourced Armed forces provide for the UK.

Starmer will go down in history as the PM that betrayed the country, more concerned with votes and keeping back benchers happy than defence of the realm. What a legacy. Failed and failing, utterly shameful and borderline treasonable.

Very true but such is the dogma of the Labour Party that I don’t see any of the currently favoured alternatives as being any better. With massive unskilled immigration and the emigration of those with wealth and talent, it will be a long road to turning this country round.

Not only Starmer. All our PMs since Thatcher are equally culpable.

Totally agree with regard to cuts but none of them (except Sunak and Johnson) were in post facing the defence challenges the country does now.

When Starmer is in a corner it becomes someone else’s fault. When he said defence is his number one priority in the same sentence he said Rachel Reeves, our Chancellor of the Exchequer, didn’t have the money. That’s like me saying I can’t fix the front door lock because the mrss wants to spend the money on a visit to Universal Studios.

As I see it the youth of today have no interest in service for their country not exactly battering the careers office doors down if we had any that is !! You can’t beat gazing through the window at all the action pictures then going to speak to a real service person

There’s a lot of Starmer bashing in the comments. When it comes to defence spending, we can blame every PM for the past four decades.

Sadly everything you argue for is quite literally “foreign” to Starmer and his MPs. A big majority has done for the Labour Party as it did for the Tories, responcibility is swapped for dogma. There is no pride in being British, nothing to defend. Those who work are a tool for redistribution, funds to enable the State to leach into everyone’s lives. Worse than that, every action creates a reaction, the over taxed, those without opportunity reach for change, there lies a wolf in sheep’s clothing.

Not just Starmer. Every PM since Thatcher over the past four decades.
