Time on a wet Tuesday.
Something to contemplate.
It’s raining outside, I don’t want to switch the TV or music on. I want to contemplate time. I am taking time, using my time.
Strange we consider time to be something physical. I would argue time as we imagine it doesn’t exist. Time as past, present, and future is a construct. It is a measurement. We invented clocks, the earliest examples are the great stone rings that litter the world to mark the changing of the seasons. Measuring the number of times the sun rises and falls before returning to it’s original start point might have been our first form of measured time. We named days and months and called it a calendar. The calendar allowed is to make arrangements, to cooperate and achieve. We would be unable to cooperate without some form of time measurement, but does time really exist? Is it that so called line along which we travel or is that also another construct from science fiction where the past and the future are places along that line where it might be possible to return or advance to?
I would argue that time doesn’t exist, there is no such place as past or present. There is only this ever changing now that we exist in. ‘The Now’ cannot be described as a moment because even a moment implies there is a period between cause and effect that can be measured. We only have time in our existence, now.
It might also be argued that we never change our place of existence. We are always here, for when we move our physical frame to another location that is also here. Here, is where we always are, - in the here and now. We are never there. We exist because we exist and experience our existence.
Our existence starts when we are concieved or born, and our personality is developed from our collated memories and experiences. I would argue that ‘the past’ is simply our combined memories and experiences.
Imagine existing at the age of twenty with no memories or experiences. We wouldn’t be able to walk or talk. We need memories and experiences to exist. The so called ‘future’ on the other hand is simply plans, anticipations and expectations. It is not a place; it is a construct in our minds that helps our existence to make sense of our existence with others. Combined with measured time is allows us to cooperate.
Time as a place doesn’t exist, there is only now. Time as a measurement exists, but we created it.
I’m sure some readers would quote physics, perhaps the special and general theories of relativity. I’m no expert in those fields but I understand that measured time changes, depending on our movement relative to another object but that is still measured time. If I travel very close to the speed of light my measured time is different to someone else, but I still exist now, I don’t exist anywhere else in time or space.
My belief that I exist now and only now, is supported by evidence. ‘I think therefore I am.,’ said Descartes. We know that to be true, or we would be dead. I cannot be there, because once I move, I am instantly here, always here. I cannot be in the future or past because I am always in the now.
The now exists as constant flux, we can affect the now within our sphere of existence and cause it to change to some of our desires but only within our sphere. Outside said ‘sphere’ we have no control, no effect. As we exist, we must conclude our importance is very limited, the only thing we can truly change is ourselves, the only changes we can make are within ourselves.
I imagine myself coming into existence as a spiritual being that enters a perishable frame. I know my body is perishable, I watch and feel it deteriorate but I also feel I exist behind these eyes or within this frame. I have a personality built on experience, a superstructure built of the foundations of my basic existence, ‘my spirit’ if you will allow me that term.
When I cease to exist, my fabricated personality will end and my imaginary building will disappear, leaving only the foundations. Is that nothing, like time is nothing? or is it something wonderful? I think, therefore I am, right now, I am here.
If you are reading this, you have entered my sphere on influence. I hope that’s a good thing. We are cooperating here and now.
The rain has stopped; I have stuff to do. I hope we meet again in the now. Sorry if I messed up something for the Trekkies.
