Power flows, as do people.

Nothing really changes.

When a country is invaded it is more important to exist than it is to win. An invading force is operating a long way from home in a hostile environment. The land, the customs and the people are all unfamiliar and become enemies of the occupiers. An invader has to hold the ground, replace the administration, and control the politics. It is often the occupier who changes. The peoples invaded must only continue to eventually obtain victory.

An invaded, occupied people are amongst friends, living in their own homes. They belong; this is their country, and time will eventually return it to them. The Mongols conquered the whole of Asia from Beijing to Vienna but eventually most of them went home, leaving a strong genetic marker behind.

Depending on one’s perspective the USA conquered western Europe in 1944/45 but they have mostly gone home apart from a few airfields and toe holds. When the British Empire folded, India reamined predominantly Indian, China, Chinese and Persia remained Persian even after Alexander. Eventually the land returns to the people no matter who the conquerors are. Looking back, it makes the process of war seem rather pointless unless we accept war is part of our nature. We acquire one another’s resources, share our genes, and make huge strides in technology when faced with adversity. The pot gets stirred; the herd is culled; then we start again.

Whatever happens in the next few years, Ukraine will be Ukrainian and Iran will always belong to Iranians.
