Sounds very much like how one of my brothers viewed the world. He was very smart, but wasn't interested in fitting in, and was puzzled by why others thought ot was important. For a long time he had a sign on his refrigerator: "I'll never understand people. Even being one doesn't seem to help."
20 years ago, in his 50s, he was diagnosed as having "Asperher's Syndrome". Today I thing they call it "being on the Autism spectrum". Perhaps I have a bit of it, too!
